Catalog Course Description:    
   Theory and practice of basic elements of music.
Entry Level Standards:    
   The student entering this course should be able to read at college level and perform mathematical calculations involving fractions. No prior knowledge of music is required.

  D. Develop the ability to relate written music notation to the piano keyboard. I.1, III.1, III.2

  F. Acquire and utilize knowledge of the basic terms used to indicate  
tempo, dynamics, and mood in music. III.1, III.2

V. Evaluation:
A. Testing Procedures:
 1. Students will be given 5 objective cumulative tests (10% each) during the semester.  These  exams will consist of short answer questions to determine the students' understanding of the concepts. 
2. Students will be given a number of short quizzes throughout the semester, covering concepts currently being studied.  The average of all quizzes will constitute 25% of the final grade. 
3. Students will be given a comprehensive final exam at the end of the semester.  This will constitute 25% of the final grade.  Questions will consist of short answer and written applications.

 Students are encouraged to attend live performances of music in the classical genre.

VI. Policies:
Attendance Policy:
REQUIRED!  Roll will be taken.  Students are responsible for work missed due to absence.  Pellissippi State Technical Community College expects students to attend all scheduled instructional activities. As a minimum, students in all courses must be present for at least 75 percent of their scheduled class and laboratory meetings in order to receive credit for the course. Individual departments/programs/disciplines, with the approval of the vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, may have requirements that are more stringent.
