OST 1002--Word II CBT

Catalog Course Description:
Advanced concepts and applications of Microsoft Word for Windows for professional and/or personal use, emphasizing commonly used commands and strategies for formatting, editing, and revising text. The course is created specifically to meet the Microsoft Office User Specialist Program guidelines. It is delivered through Computer Based Training materials; some basic computer-use knowledge is required.
Entry-level Standards:
Basic computer operation knowledge and ability to use the Internet.
Prerequisite:
 OST 1001--Word I CBT or equivalent
Textbooks and Other Supplies
I.    Unit/Topic/Basis (Tentative Schedule)
Since you may be taking more than one MOUS course, the schedule below is set up so that you can complete the course  in eight weeks and then complete a second MOUS course during the next eight weeks.    If you are taking three MOUS courses,  you will either need to complete a course in less than eight weeks or  work on two courses at the same time.  (To complete two or three courses in one semester, it is imperative that you budget your time accordingly.)

II.    Course Objectives.
  1. Demonstrate intermediate  features of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Word. I, III,  VI, X.
  2. Apply intermediate Word formats. I,  III, VI, IX, X.
  3. Create charts and manipulate graphics and WordArt. I, III, VI, IX, X.
III.    Instructional Processes.
  1. Use technology to promote the objectives of this course; specifically, the Windows operating system, the Internet, email, and word processing applications. Technological Literacy Outcome
  2. Use email to communicate problems, questions, and issues to instructor. Communications Outcome
  3. Use a personal computer, browser software, and the Internet, read and respond to tutorials on how to use the application packages presented in this course to gain user proficiency. Technological Literacy Outcome and Problem Solving and Decision Making Outcome
  4. Use the skills and applications taught in the SmartForce tutorials in actual work required in exercises that simulate real-world applications. Transitional Strategy
  5. Download applications from the Web and install the applications on the student's personal computer to complete research activities required in exercises. Active Learning Strategy
IV.    Expectations of Student Performance.
         Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  16. Use an IF field and insert a Fill-in field in main document.
  17. Format text using intermediate columns. (A,B)

  21. Use character formatting such as drop cap, character spacing, highlighting text, etc.

V.    Evaluation
  1. 90 Percent - Tests:

  2. Two types of tests will be given in this course for grade determination:
    (1) short-answer tests administered through the SmartForce software (taken over the Web) and
    (2) SAM application test over the textbook material (taken in the Main Campus Testing Center).

     Number of tests:

    1. One SmartForce tutorial test delivered over the Web
      • Working with Documents in Word 2002
    2. One  SAM application test over textbook material taken in the Main Campus Testing Center
      • Projects 4, 5, and 6
    The grades on these two tests will be averaged and will count 90 percent of the total grade.
     
  3. Laboratory expectations--not applicable

  5. 10 Percent - Other Evaluation Methods

  6. 5 percent--Active involvement in WebCT email communication with instructor and successful download of necessary files and  programs for coursework
    5 percent--Successful completion and grade on WebCT Site Quiz

    The final grade will be determined as noted above using the following grading scale.

A 93-100
B+  90-92
B 85-59
C+ 80-84
D 70-74
F 69 and below
VI.    Policies:
  1. Students must have a valid PSTCC ID to be presented on demand to gain access to PSTCC facilities.
  2. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular Pellissippi State procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course. Where do I begin?
  1. Once you have your supplies and hardware/software setup, you should go to http://www.pstcc.edu.
  2. Click on the Online Courses Link,, click on Login to My WebCT, and then login to WebCT.
  3. Click on OST 1002WW1 Word 11 CBT and then select the Course Information icon.
  4. Choose the icon labeled Class Map and Due Dates, choose Map for Word II and print out the Class Map. This document will guide you through the course. It contains a list of the SmartForce (CBT) tutorial you will use, the textbook pages for exercises and review to complete, and a listing of what tests you need to take and when to take them.

 Minimum hardware requirements:
  •  Pentium class or better
  • 166 MHz processing speed
  •  3.5" floppy drive
  •  56Mb RAM memory for Win98

  •  96Mb RAM for Win2002
    160MB RAM for Win XP
  •  360Mb disk space for  Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access if using Win 2000 or WinXP (an additional 50 MB of dsik space is required if using Win 98)
  •   Microsoft mouse compatible
  •  56K modem for dialup access (cable modem or DSL highly desirable)
  • At least VGA graphics capability with a minimum of 512K video RAM (1Mb video

  •    RAM recommended)
       Super VGA recommended.
  • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution monitor with 256 colors.
Minimum Software Requirements:

You need to know how to use your computer and how to use the Internet. You will need to  have the following software installed on your computer:

  •  Windows 98 or higher
  • An Internet browser.  Netscape Navigator version 4.76 or 6.2.x (versions 4.78, 4.79 not recommended) OR Internet Explorer (IE) version 5.0 or higher (version 5.5 Service Pack 1 is not supported) OR AOL 7.0.  See  Minimum System Requirements for WebCT for more information.
  • MS Office 2002 Professional
  • SmartForce (CBT) Tutorials downloaded and installed after you are registered in the course. This is a free download to play the SmartForce computer based training tutorials and tests that are used.

Course structure:

 OST 1001 and OST 1002 (Word I-II) provide you the opportunity to learn most of the skills required for the Core level  of  the Microsoft Office User Specialist Certification Exam for Word.  (See WD E.03-E.04 in your textbook.)  Your text and the SmartForce tutorials are Microsoft-approved courseware that matches the proficiency guidelines developed by Microsoft for the certification exam. In addition, these one-hour courses can be combined to meet the requirements for Pellissippi State MOUS certificates.

This course is delivered as an online course over the World Wide Web (WWW).  Assignments will consist of

Readings, text exercises, and SmartForce tutorials assessments should be completed prior to taking the SAM tests.

You have 15 weeks to complete this course; however, if you are taking more than one MOUS course, you should complete this course in 8 weeks.

 As a registered student, you can use the open computer labs at Pellissippi State.
