Catalog Course Description:
Features, commands, and capabilities of PowerPoint: fundamentals of creating business presentations for delivery via overhead transparencies, electronic slide shows, and paper-based printouts. The course is created specifically to meet the Microsoft Office User Specialist Program guidelines. It is delivered through Computer Based Training materials; some basic computer-use knowledge is required.
Entry-level Standards:
Basic knowledge of a personal computer and its operation
Prerequisite:
 OST 1100--Keyboarding I or equivalent
Textbooks and Other Supplies
I. Unit/Topic/Basis (Tentative Schedule)
Using the outline tab and clip art to create a slide show.
Download  the SmartForce tutorials to your home computer.  Work through SmartForce Tutorials on Creating Presentations using  PowerPoint 2002.   Take the online SmartForce  Assessments over Creating Presentations using PowerPoint 2002.
Take Sam Application test on the Main Campus Testing Center over Projects 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Be sure to take the practice SAM test that is available in the testing center before you take the SAM application test over Projects 1, 2, 3 and 4.
II. Course Objectives.
  1. Demonstrate use  of Microsoft PowerPoint. I, II, , VI, X
  2. Create and edit  presentations using PowerPoint. I,  III, VI, IX, X
  3. Print presentations using PowerPoint. I,  III, VI, XI, X
III. Instructional Processes.
  1. Use technology to promote the objectives of this course; specifically,  the Internet, email, and presentation graphics applications. Technological Literacy Outcome
  2. Use email to communicate problems, questions, and issues to instructor. Communications Outcome
  3. Use a personal computer, browser software, and the Internet, to read and respond to tutorials on how to use the application packages presented in this course to gain user proficiency. Technological Literacy Outcome and Problem Solving and Decision Making Outcome
  4. Use the skills and applications taught in the CBT tutorials in actual work required in exercises that simulate real-world applications. Transitional Strategy
  5. Download applications from the Web and install the applications on the student's personal computer to complete research activities required in exercises. Active Learning Strategy
IV. Expectations of Student Performance.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Use Internet resources. (A)

  4. Start an application program in Windows 98 or higher. (A)

  8. Print presentation using different print options. (C)
  9. Use the PowerPoint help system. (A,B)

  12. Insert and modify clip art into a slide. (A,B)
  13. Apply animation to text and clip art. (A,B)
  14. Apply slide transition effects. (A,B)

  16. Create and modify embedded visuals (organizational charts, tables, clip art, etc). (A,B)
  17. Import an outline created in Microsoft Word. (A,B)

  20. Use action buttons and hyperlinks. (A,B)
  21. Hide a slide. (A,B)

V. Evaluation
    1. 90 Percent  Tests:

    2. Two types of tests will be given in this course for grade determination:
      (1) Short-answer tests administered through the SmartForce tutorial software (taken over the Web) and
      (2) SAM application test over the textbook material (taken in the Main Campus Testing Center).

        Number of tests:

        One SmartForce tutorial assessment taken over the web
        •  Microsoft Office XP:  Creating Presentations using PowerPoint 2002
        One SAM  test taken in the Main Campus Testing Center
        • Projects 1-4 in texbook
      (The grades on the four tests will be averaged and will count as 90 percent of the total grade.)
       
    3. Laboratory expectations--not applicable

    5. 10 Percent Other Evaluation Methods

    6.       5 percent - Active involvement in WebCT email communication with instructor and successful
           download of necessary files and programs for coursework

          5 percent - Successful completion and grade on WebCT Site Quiz
      (The grades on these two items will be averaged and will count as 10 percent of the total grade.)

      Grading Scale:

Technology requirements:  You need to know how to use your computer and how to use the Internet.
To complete this course, the following hardware/browser/software are recommended:  (As a registered student, you can use the open computer labs at Pellissippi State.)

Where do I begin?
  1. Once you have your supplies, hardware/software setup, you should go to  http://webct.pstcc.edu.
  2. Click on Log into My WebCT.
  3. Click on OST 1006WWI PowerPoint  CBT course link and click the Course Information icon.
  4. Choose the icon labeled Class Map and Due Dates, choose Map for PowerPoint,  and print out the Class Map for PowerPoint. This document will guide you through the course.   It contains a list of the SmartForce tutorials and assessment  you will take, the textbook pages to read and exercises to complete, and a listing of what tests you need to take and when to take them.

Course structure:
 OST 1006 provides you the opportunity to learn most of the skills (See page PP E.03 in your textbook) required for the Microsoft Office User Specialist Certification Exam for PowerPoint. Your text is Microsoft-approved courseware that matches the proficiency guidelines developed by Microsoft for the certification exam. In addition, these one-hour courses can be combined to meet the requirements for  Pellissippi State CBT certificates.
